Empathy is a capability we all have—perhaps to greater or lesser degrees—that allows us to put ourselves in the place of another person and experience their feelings. We all crave connectedness and it seems our brains are hard-wired to mirror others experiences. We tend to understand ourselves through the people we spend time with and we derive our sense of self from the types of people with whom we have the closest relationships. Empathy also facilitates cooperation which is critical for teams to function effectively. Empathy can expand your horizons and extend your thinking. By understanding an unfamiliar point of view, you can stretch and test new perspectives and ideas—a process key for successful innovation and important to ensuring your thinking doesn’t stagnate. Use empathy to build things people actually want, pitch your ideas, connect with colleagues and yourself, accomplish more in a team and expand your own perspectives.
I think innovation touches every aspect of our lives including being able to design the lives that we want for ourselves. I write about corporate innovation, design thinking, agile mindset and how everyday people can innovate their lives and design a new life or get more out of their current life.
I haven't has a straight path in life and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. All I know that I am living true to my values and adding value where I can and taking moments of gratitude when I can. We are presented with problems and opportunities in life, how we act on them is why we are here.
Creativity comes from curiosity. The more curious you are about the world, the more you experience and learn. The more you experience and learn, the more connections your brain is able to make. And with more connections, you can find new solutions to problems or see things no one else can see.
